During the time that Cook was in NL he was not, as yet, a Captain. As well as mapping the coastline, his work included identifying good harbours to fish from. And many sites he selected became the fishing outports that were the backbone of the ground fishery on the Island.

When we first positioned the sculpture we had Cook facing the water. Luben advises, correctly, that this was not historically correct. Cook would be facing the shore not the water, as he used triangulation, aided by crew members on land to map the coastline of the Bay of Islands.

The Captain Cook Site provides a spectacular view of the Bay of Islands and Corner Brook. The site development included a stone entry sign and a short looped walking system. The centrepiece of the design is a monumental sculpture (10ft) designed by sculptor Luben Bykov. Local attractive flagstone was used in the ground plane, interpretive panels tell the story of Cook, and the sculpture is the centrepiece of the entire design and has become an icon for the City. The Park build was managed by the Corner Brook Stream Development Association with oversight by Tract.
